Tribute to Markos Vamvakaris, ‘The Patriarch of Rebetiko’

Born on the island of Syros n 1905, from the humblest of roots, Markos Vamvakaris became revered as the Patriarch of Rebetiko music. His unique simple way of playing the bouzouki and his deep, earthy, “metallic” voice became the iconic sound of Rebetiko music.

The Rebetiko Carnival musicians will present a programme of his greatest songs as well as lesser known gems. The music will be preceded by a short talk about the life of Markos Vamvakaris (speaker: Noonie Minogue)

1) What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

Nearest stations: Dalston Kingsland is one minute’s walk away & Dalston Junction is three minutes away. Both are on the London Overground – part of the tube network.

From central London, change to Overground (direction Stratford) at Highbury & Islington.

Last trains run at around 2355 in both directions from Dalston Kingsland, earlier at weekends.

Buses: 30, 38, 67, 76, 149, 236, 242, 243, 488

2) Venue accessibility

The Vortex Club is a small first-floor venue. There is a disabled toilet on the ground floor. For wheelchair users there is lift access via the adjoining HCD building. Please notify the venue about your needs prior to booking your ticket, their volunteer staff will do all they can to accommodate you.

There is no need to print out your ticket. We will have a printed list of attendees at the entrance.
