Three of Greece’s greatest singers take you on a journey through the country’s rich musical heritage, from traditional folk and ethnic songs through to their modern descendants, Rebetiko and Laika.
Sitting at a crossroads between Asia and Europe, Greek music manages to combine influences from both into something wholly unique. With three of the country’s most distinctive voices backed by a 9-piece orchestra featuring traditional instruments, this concert is a chance to immerse yourself in the full breadth of Greek song, from early Folk music through to Rebetiko and Laika, the passionate yet melancholic sound of Greece’s musical underground. Supported by three perfect voices, this performance echoes contemporary Greece paying tribute to its true musical tradition/heritage.
Dimitra Galani’s career spans four decades and includes collaborations with Greece’s most important composers and lyricists (such as Hadjidakis and Tsitsanis) as well as international artists like Cesaria Evora. Eleni Tsaligopoulou has also had a long and distinctive presence in the Greek music scene, moving comfortably across genres and styles and experimenting with traditional forms. Giota Nega is one of the most authentic voices of urban Greek music (Laika) and her recent work with new composers has been warmly welcomed by audiences. Meeting on stage for the first time, the three together are the perfect artists to give a performance that sounds contemporary while staying true to tradition.
