“Plastikes Karekles represent a culture of reinvention as defiant and hopeful as the music itself.”
– Song Lines magazine
Once Upon a Time in Greece is a Plastikes Karekles project that takes us on a journey through different golden eras of Greek music. Starting from the music of Smyrna and Asia minor, through to Rebetiko, Arhondorebetiko, then more popular Laiko music. We continue our journey making stops at the beautifully sentimental retro music of Sougioul, and the more art house music of Theodorakis, Hadjidakis, Xarhakos as well as some more contemporary composers such as Kraounakis and “the last true laiko composer” Korakakis.
Sit back and relax… drown your sorrows in a drink and the caress of a beautiful melody… celebrate a new job with bopping, foot stamping, heart pumping Greek rhythms… wherever the mood takes you there will be something for you.

An eclectic fusion of international and Greek musicians with roots from traditional Greek folk to classical and jazz. The group have appeared at performances and festivals in Greece and elsewhere abroad. In the UK they have performed at Purcell Room, Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall, St David’s Hall as part of the Proms, King’s Place, as well as more intimate venues such as the Green Note, Vortex and the Forge, London.
The musicians of Plastikes Karekles are also the founding members of the Rebetiko Carnival, a festival with rebetiko music at its heart. They are dedicated to exposing this treasured music to as many people as possible.
A very important part of Plastikes Karekles work is also education and outreach work. This has taken them to not only mainstream schools, but also special needs homes, hospitals and prisons throughout the UK.
