Government Spokesman: “The termination of the occupation and the reunification of our homeland is a strategic objective”

The termination of the occupation and the reunification of our homeland is a strategic objective and, on our part, we will do whatever is possible to achieve this objective, said the Government Spokesman, Nikos Christodoulides, today.

In reference to the meeting of the National Council, the Spokesman said that “a good discussion took place, mainly of a briefing nature. The President of the Republic briefed on the developments following Geneva; more specifically about what took place at the meeting of technocrats in Mont Pelerin, about his international contacts, about the discussions at the negotiating table with Mr Akinci, and about the Turkish demand concerning the four freedoms.

The President of the Republic responded to some clarification questions and then, the discussion focused on the issues that have been caused related to the misinterpretation of the recent decision of the House of Representatives, and then, we moved on with the issuing of the unanimous decision of the National Council.”

Asked whether the Turkish side has clearly set as a precondition for the convention of the Conference on Cyprus, the acceptance for granting the four freedoms to Turkish citizens and for the issue of the participation of the Turkish Cypriots in the decision-making organs, the Spokesman said that “there cannot be such a precondition. If there will be a precondition of this kind, the responsibility for the non-continuation of the dialogue in Geneva will bear the Turkish side. But under absolutely no circumstances there can be any preconditions.”

In response to another question, he said that “if some people wish for the dialogue not to proceed there are many ways to achieve that. If, however, we really want this dialogue to proceed, if we approach the talks with the necessary and absolute seriousness then yes, the necessary conditions can be created that will allow us to be optimistic. This is our approach. Beyond that, you are aware that we don’t negotiate alone at the negotiating table. We hope that the same will exists on the other side too, and through the discussions that will be held there will be this kind of developments that will allow us to be optimistic. But, I repeat, if we are in need of pretenses it is certain that any party at the negotiating table can find a pretense in order to cause problems. We continue our effort; the termination of the occupation and the reunification of our homeland is a strategic objective and, on our part, I can assure you that we will do whatever is possible to achieve this objective.”/IBNA
