Crossing the wine-dark sea

Thanasis Gavos   Thursday, 1 February 2018; 7:15pm

A selection of readings from Homer’s Odyssey, along with modern poems about refugees, homecoming and the sea.

The sea was at the heart of the ancient world: it facilitated trade and cultural exchange, helping to shape identity.

But the sea was also a barrier: a dangerous crossing-point which brought death and misery to many.
